Nigerian writer, filmmaker and academician Onyeka Nwelue is attracting international literary attention with his latest novel, “Tokyo Spies” , after reports that a Japanese publisher acquired the book in a deal worth ¥85 million (about USD 600,000), one of the largest reported acquisitions for an African literary work in the Japanese market. The agreement was announced from Tokyo ahead of the book's June 2026 release.

Set in 1887, Tokyo Spies follows Zenjiro Ito , a calligraphy student at Tokyo Imperial University who abandons his gravely ill family and flees to Tianjin, China, under the guise of pursuing artistic excellence. There, he becomes entangled in relationships with Lin Ruo and Mei while building a life founded on deception.

As his lies unravel, Zenjiro loses his home, artistic reputation and personal relationships. Forced into poverty, he develops an original calligraphic style that blends Chinese and Japanese traditions, transforming art into a vehicle for truth, self-examination and redemption. A devastating letter eventually compels him to return to Japan and confront the consequences of his choices.

The novel explores themes of guilt, duty, migration, identity, cultural belonging and the emotional cost of escape. According to reports, it is the first instalment in a planned six-book series set in Japan, reflecting Nwelue's long-term engagement with the country's history, art and society.

Nwelue, who has published more than 40 books, is currently studying calligraphy in Osaka . His academic career has included positions at Oxford, Cambridge, Ohio University and the University of Johannesburg, while his films have been screened at major international festivals, including Toronto. The novel's blend of Japanese history, Chinese exile and African literary perspective has helped make it one of the most talked-about international fiction releases of 2026.
