India’s Operation Sindoor has found its way into US election campaigning, with President Donald Trump once again claiming that threats of massive tariffs forced India and Pakistan to halt their military confrontation in May 2025. Trump also voiced fresh disappointment over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his claimed role in ending multiple wars.

Addressing an election rally in Florida on Friday, Trump said he had prevented the two nuclear-armed neighbours from escalating their conflict by warning that continued fighting would come at a steep economic cost.

“You stop India and Pakistan, two nuclear nations,” Trump told the gathering, claiming he had threatened to impose tariffs of 250 per cent on both countries if they continued fighting. According to him, the warning prompted the two sides to stop shooting and brought the conflict to an end.

Trump also referred to the military losses suffered during the confrontation, claiming that “eleven planes were shot”. He presented the episode as part of his wider diplomatic record, asserting that he had helped end several conflicts without seeking assistance from the United Nations.

“I'd never made one phone call to the United Nations. But we got them all stopped,” he said, adding that he had not anticipated dealing with so many wars when he ran for office.

The US President also returned to his long-running grievance over being overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize. “I've settled eight wars. Did I get the Nobel Prize? No,” he said, expressing frustration that his claimed diplomatic achievements had not earned him the prestigious award.

India has consistently rejected Trump's assertion that he brokered the ceasefire between New Delhi and Islamabad, maintaining that the understanding to halt military action was reached directly between the two countries.
