Osmania Doctors Honoured For Historic Five-Organ Transplant Breakthrough
In a landmark recognition of medical excellence, the multi-speciality team of Osmania General Hospital was felicitated on Friday after successfully performing a rare five-organ (multi-visceral) transplant on a single patient a procedure considered among the most complex in modern surgical practice.
The team was honoured by Telangana Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat, where he lauded the doctors for achieving a milestone that places Telangana on the national medical map. The minister personally felicitated each member of the transplant unit by presenting shawls and extending his appreciation for their contribution.
According to officials, the high-risk surgery involved transplanting multiple internal organs in a single procedure a feat achieved for the first time in a government hospital in India. The operation, led by senior surgeon Dr. Madhusudan , lasted nearly 36 continuous hours , demanding exceptional coordination across surgical, anaesthesia, gastroenterology, critical care, nursing, and transplant coordination teams.
The Health Minister described the achievement as a matter of state and national pride , stating that the success of Osmania doctors demonstrates how government hospitals are now capable of matching the standards of leading corporate healthcare institutions. He also acknowledged the emotional and humanitarian dimension of the case, paying tribute to the donor’s family and highlighting that “organ donation is the greatest form of charity.”
Reiterating the government’s healthcare priorities under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the minister said sustained reforms are underway to strengthen public health infrastructure. He noted that nearly 15,000 healthcare posts have been filled in the past two-and-a-half years , with an additional 6,238 posts recently sanctioned to further reinforce medical services across the state.
He also highlighted ongoing upgrades in public hospitals and medical colleges, including new buildings, modern diagnostic systems, and advanced operation theatres aimed at improving patient care delivery.
Officials present at the event said the achievement reflects the growing capability of Telangana’s public healthcare system and the dedication of medical professionals who continue to push boundaries in life-saving treatment.
