Owaisi Proposes Maulvi Allauddin’s Name for Warangal Airport

AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has urged Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to name the proposed Warangal airport after freedom fighter Syed Allauddin Haider, popularly known as Maulvi Allauddin. Owaisi made the proposal after the Chief Minister invited suggestions from the public on September 19 for naming the upcoming airport.

In a letter to Revanth Reddy, Owaisi highlighted both the historical significance of the airport site and the contribution of Maulvi Allauddin to the freedom struggle. He said the present airport area was developed during the Nizam’s rule in the 1930s to support transportation requirements of industries in Warangal. The facility, he noted, was particularly useful for industrial establishments such as Azam Jahi Mills.

Owaisi said Maulvi Allauddin was among the prominent freedom fighters associated with the erstwhile Warangal district and played a significant role in the resistance against British rule during the 1857 uprising. He recalled that Allauddin, along with Turrebaz Khan, led the historic attack on the British Residency in Hyderabad on July 17, 1857.

The resistance became an important episode in Hyderabad’s opposition to British authority during the uprising. Owaisi said Allauddin was subsequently captured by the British and arrested. He was later imprisoned at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman Islands, where he endured colonial imprisonment.

According to Owaisi, Allauddin’s contribution to Hyderabad’s history and the wider freedom movement in southern India reflected courage, sacrifice and resistance. Naming the Warangal airport after him, he said, would provide an appropriate tribute to his role in the struggle against colonial rule.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister’s call for suggestions has resulted in several proposals from different sections. Film director Sandeep Reddy Vanga suggested ‘Rudrama International Airport’ and ‘Kakatiya International Airport’, citing Warangal’s association with the Kakatiya dynasty and the legacy of Rani Rudrama Devi.

CPI leader K. Narayana has proposed naming the airport after former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao.

Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy said work on the airport’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) is underway, while the layout of the airport buildings has reached its final stage. He also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi may perform the airport’s groundbreaking ceremony.
