Pakistani drone drops heroin worth over Rs 8 crore, seized in Jammu

In a striking example of evolving smuggling tactics along the International Border , security forces in Jammu recovered over 1.5 kilograms of heroin , estimated to be worth more than Rs 8 crore , which was reportedly dropped by a Pakistani drone into Indian territory late on Wednesday night.

The high-value narcotics were found in a field in Bahadurpura village in the Bishnah area after a local resident spotted a suspicious bag and alerted authorities. Preliminary investigations by the Jammu police indicate the bag was likely air-dropped from a drone flying in from across the border , a method increasingly being used by smugglers to ferry contraband into India’s border belts.

In recent weeks, Jammu’s border districts have also witnessed the recovery of balloons carrying foreign currency notes and coded markings , which officials believe may be linked to signaling or diversion tactics used by handlers on the other side of the border . In one such incident near the Akhnoor sector, two balloons, one with a Pakistani Rs 5,000 note and a US dollar attached, were found stuck in a tree, apparently having drifted over from Pakistan.

Security agencies have launched a comprehensive probe into the heroin drop and the broader aerial activity over the border, including the balloons and suspected drone movements. Police have registered a case and are combing through intelligence leads to trace the origin of the drone flight path , its possible handlers and any local recipients or collaborators waiting to collect the airdropped consignments.

Officials say these incidents underscore a growing trend: smugglers are increasingly exploiting unmanned aerial vehicles and airborne devices to bypass traditional border checkpoints. Forces including the Border Security Force (BSF) and Jammu and Kashmir Police are intensifying patrols and surveillance along the border to thwart future attempts and identify wider smuggling networks.

Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and report any unusual objects or aerial activity to authorities, especially in forward villages near the International Border.
