Parents and teachers in Himachal Pradesh have welcomed the state government’s decision to ban mobile phones in all government and private schools from March 1, saying the move will improve students’ focus and overall well-being.

The ban was announced on February 5 by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu , who stated that strict action would be taken against violations. Under the order, students found carrying mobile phones in school will face confiscation of the device and a fine of Rs 500 . The education department has directed all school managements to ensure strict compliance with the directive .

Parents across the state supported the decision, saying it will help reduce excessive screen time and encourage better interaction among children. A parent from Shimla said the policy is a good step as children today spend too much time on phones and often neglect studies and family communication. Another parent from Nankheri noted that reducing mobile usage will contribute to the mental and physical health of students .

Some parents also observed that the decision should have been implemented earlier, though they welcomed it as a positive and necessary measure. They added that limiting screen exposure will give students’ eyes rest and promote healthier habits.

Teachers have also backed the move. A government school teacher said that while mobile phones can be used for academic enrichment , students were often found watching reels or engaging in non-academic activities during school hours. He said the ban will help restore classroom discipline and focus.

Authorities have emphasized that schools must monitor implementation carefully to ensure the policy achieves its intended purpose of improving learning outcomes and reducing distractions.
