PM Modi to Inaugurate Chennai Metro Phase II Stretch, Unveil Rs 13,000-Crore Projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Chennai on Sunday to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 13,000 crore, with a major focus on metro rail, highways and railway infrastructure.

During the visit, Modi will inaugurate the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, constructed at a cost of Rs 4,900 crore, according to an official statement. The prime minister will also undertake a ride on the Chennai Metro from Porur Bypass Station to Poonamallee Bypass Station and back.

As part of the infrastructure push, Modi will inaugurate or lay the foundation stone for National Highway projects worth around Rs 3,700 crore.

These include the 36-km, four-laned Vadugapatti–Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744, which is expected to improve connectivity to important pilgrimage, industrial and commercial centres in the region. He will also inaugurate a 30-km, four-laned section of the Madurai Ring Road on NH-744A to ease traffic movement around the city.

The prime minister will lay the foundation stone for the four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83. The project is aimed at strengthening road connectivity and providing an alternative route to facilitate smoother traffic movement in the town.

Railway infrastructure projects worth over Rs 750 crore will also be inaugurated during the visit.

Modi's itinerary includes prayers at the Jalakandeswarar Temple and participation in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai. He will also undertake a walkthrough of the Brain Centre at IIT Madras and address a gathering, the statement said.

The visit underscores the Centre's infrastructure development push in Tamil Nadu, particularly in urban mobility and road connectivity, with projects expected to improve transportation links and ease congestion in key locations.
