Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Canada on December 11 and 12, 2026, with negotiations on a comprehensive trade agreement, energy cooperation, critical minerals, technology and security expected to dominate the agenda as New Delhi and Ottawa seek to rebuild bilateral relations and translate renewed diplomatic engagement into concrete outcomes.

The visit was confirmed by the Indian High Commission in Ottawa following a conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on October 13. The itinerary is expected to include Toronto and Ottawa, although further engagements remain possible. Both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people relations.

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is expected to be a key priority. Negotiations were formally launched during Carney’s visit to India from February 27 to March 2, 2026, with both countries aiming to conclude the agreement by the end of the year. The proposed pact seeks to improve market access, facilitate investment and reduce trade barriers. Bilateral trade in goods and services reached US$30.4 billion in 2025, while the two governments aim to increase annual trade to C$70 billion, approximately ₹4.65 lakh crore, by 2030.

Energy security will also feature prominently. During Carney’s India visit, the countries welcomed a C$2.6-billion uranium supply agreement between Canadian company Cameco and India’s Department of Atomic Energy. Discussions could also cover oil, liquefied natural gas, renewable energy and energy storage.

Cooperation in critical minerals and emerging technologies is another priority. A memorandum of understanding signed in March covers mineral exploration, processing and investment, while artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, digital infrastructure and scientific research offer further opportunities.

The visit comes after relations deteriorated in 2023, following Canadian allegations concerning the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India rejected the allegations. Subsequent diplomatic tensions disrupted engagement, but both governments have since pursued a gradual reset through high-level meetings and security dialogue.
