Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a three nation diplomatic tour covering Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 6 to 11 , in a visit aimed at strengthening India's engagement with key partners in the Indo Pacific region. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the itinerary on Friday, highlighting the growing strategic and economic importance of the three countries in India's foreign policy.

The visit will begin in Indonesia , followed by Australia , where the Prime Minister's key engagements will take place in Melbourne . The final leg of the tour will be New Zealand , making it a particularly significant visit as it will be the first by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in nearly 40 years , according to MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon .

Earlier on Friday, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced that Prime Minister Modi would undertake his first official visit to New Zealand next week . Sharing the announcement on social media, Luxon described India as one of the world's largest and fastest growing economies and an increasingly important partner for New Zealand's long term prosperity.

The visit comes just months after India and New Zealand signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in April 2026 , a pact expected to significantly deepen economic cooperation between the two countries. The agreement is designed to boost two way trade in goods and services, encourage greater investment, and create fresh opportunities for businesses on both sides.

For New Zealand , the FTA provides access to India's vast 1.4 billion consumer market , helping expand exports, generate employment and drive economic growth. Luxon said the agreement would create more jobs, increase exports and raise incomes for communities across the country.

For India , the deal strengthens access to a high income, rules based Pacific market while supporting its broader Indo Pacific economic strategy and expanding opportunities for Indian exporters and businesses.

Economic ties between the two nations have already been on an upward trajectory. Bilateral merchandise trade reached USD 1.3 billion in 2024-25 , while total trade in goods and services stood at around USD 2.4 billion in 2024 . The services sector alone contributed USD 1.24 billion , led by travel, information technology and business services.

With visits to Indonesia , Australia and New Zealand , the Prime Minister's tour is expected to reinforce India's regional partnerships, deepen economic collaboration, expand strategic cooperation and strengthen people to people ties, giving fresh momentum to India's engagement across the Indo Pacific.
