Who Can Apply?

According to the Ministry, applicants must be Indian citizens residing in India and should be between 5 and 18 years of age as of July 31, 2026 . The achievement for which the child is nominated should generally have been accomplished within the previous two years.

The application process is entirely online. Candidates must provide personal details, select the relevant category, upload a recent photograph, and submit supporting documents. A detailed write-up of up to 1,000 words explaining the achievement, its significance and its impact is also mandatory.

Officials say this write-up often becomes one of the most important parts of the application because it helps evaluators understand not only what the child accomplished, but also why the achievement matters and how it has influenced society.

How Winners Are Chosen

Unlike many awards that rely solely on recommendations or public voting, the PMRBP follows a rigorous multi-stage evaluation process.

Applications are first scrutinized to verify eligibility, authenticity of claims and supporting evidence. Eligible nominations are then assessed by experts familiar with the relevant fields. The final shortlist is examined by a National Selection Committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, other government departments and subject specialists.

National or international recognition earned through competitions, patents, research projects, publications or sporting achievements is also taken into account. As a result, selection is not based merely on certificates or academic performance. The focus remains on identifying children whose achievements have created meaningful impact and demonstrate extraordinary potential.

Recognition Beyond a Medal

For many recipients, the PMRBP becomes a defining milestone in their lives.

Awardees traditionally receive a medal, certificate, citation, ₹1 lakh cash award and book vouchers worth ₹10,000 , according to previous government guidelines. More importantly, they gain national recognition and an opportunity to interact with the country's highest leadership.

Recipients are often invited to participate in events associated with the Republic Day celebrations , providing them with a national platform and exposure that few children receive. The recognition has helped several young achievers gain visibility for their work, attract institutional support, and inspire other children to pursue innovation, service and excellence.

What About Educational Benefits?

For several years, PMRBP winners enjoyed an additional incentive. Eligible recipients who qualified through NEET could compete for a limited number of MBBS and BDS seats under the Central Pool quota maintained by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

However, the Central Government discontinued this benefit from the 2022-23 academic year . Although the Madras High Court later recommended restoring the provision, there is currently no special admission quota available for PMRBP awardees.

Nevertheless, the prestige associated with the award continues to strengthen academic profiles and can prove beneficial while applying for scholarships, fellowships, leadership programmes and other opportunities that value exceptional achievement and public service.

Inspiration from the Telugu States

Children from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have consistently demonstrated the talent and determination celebrated by the PMRBP.

Among the recent examples is Shivani , a para-athlete from Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh , who was selected for the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2025 for her achievements in sports. Previous editions have also seen awardees from Telangana receive national recognition for outstanding accomplishments.
