PM Rashtriya Bal Puraskar: Spotlight on India’s Young Trailblazers
Every year, India celebrates its distinguished scientists, sportspersons, artists and public leaders through a range of national honours. Yet, some of the country's most inspiring stories come from those who are still in school. Whether it is a young innovator developing a solution to a local problem, a budding athlete breaking barriers, a child leading environmental campaigns, or a teenager risking personal safety to save lives, such achievements often remain unnoticed beyond local communities.
To recognize and encourage these extraordinary efforts, the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) has once again invited nominations for the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBP) 2026 , regarded as India's highest civilian honour for children. The Ministry has set July 31, 2026 , as the deadline for applications and nominations, which must be submitted through the official Rashtriya Puraskar Portal.
The award is open to children aged 5 to 18 years who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in diverse fields. Citizens, schools, educational institutions, NGOs, youth organizations, panchayats and community groups can nominate deserving candidates, while children may also submit their own applications through self-nomination.
A Legacy of Recognizing Excellence
The award in its present form was introduced in 2018 , when the Government of India consolidated earlier child-focused national honours into a single, more comprehensive recognition platform. Administered by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and conferred annually by the President of India , the PMRBP has since become the country's most prestigious award for young achievers.
The initiative was designed to ensure that exceptional talent and courage among children receive national visibility while inspiring millions of other youngsters to pursue excellence in their chosen fields. Over the years, awardees have included young inventors, environmental activists, social reformers, athletes, artists, and children who displayed remarkable bravery in life-threatening situations. Many recipients have gone on to achieve national and international success after receiving the recognition.
Six Categories Reflect India's Evolving Priorities
The PMRBP today recognizes children across six broad fields— Bravery, Social Service, Environment, Sports, Art and Culture, and Science and Technology . The categories are designed to capture the diverse ways in which young Indians contribute to society.
Children selected under the Bravery category are those who display exceptional courage, often risking their own safety to save lives or protect others during emergencies. The Social Service category honours youngsters who work to improve the lives of disadvantaged communities through initiatives related to education, healthcare, inclusion, or public welfare.
The Environment category, introduced as part of the award's modernization, recognizes children engaged in environmental conservation, climate awareness, biodiversity protection, waste management, water conservation, and sustainability campaigns. In the Sports category, the award celebrates outstanding athletic achievements at national and international levels.
Similarly, the Art and Culture category acknowledges extraordinary talent in fields such as music, dance, theatre, literature, painting and other cultural pursuits. The Science and Technology category honours young innovators, researchers, inventors and students who have demonstrated remarkable scientific aptitude or developed solutions to real-world challenges.
Who Can Apply?
According to the Ministry, applicants must be Indian citizens residing in India and should be between 5 and 18 years of age as of July 31, 2026 . The achievement for which the child is nominated should generally have been accomplished within the previous two years.
The application process is entirely online. Candidates must provide personal details, select the relevant category, upload a recent photograph, and submit supporting documents. A detailed write-up of up to 1,000 words explaining the achievement, its significance and its impact is also mandatory.
Officials say this write-up often becomes one of the most important parts of the application because it helps evaluators understand not only what the child accomplished, but also why the achievement matters and how it has influenced society.
How Winners Are Chosen
Unlike many awards that rely solely on recommendations or public voting, the PMRBP follows a rigorous multi-stage evaluation process.
Applications are first scrutinized to verify eligibility, authenticity of claims and supporting evidence. Eligible nominations are then assessed by experts familiar with the relevant fields. The final shortlist is examined by a National Selection Committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, other government departments and subject specialists.
The committee evaluates candidates on several parameters. It examines the originality of the achievement and whether the child has demonstrated exceptional excellence in the chosen field. Equal importance is given to the impact of the work on society, the number of people benefited, and the broader significance of the contribution.
Evaluators also look at innovation, creativity and problem-solving ability. Leadership qualities are another major consideration, particularly whether the child has inspired peers or mobilized communities. The committee further assesses whether the contribution represents a sustained effort over time rather than a one-time accomplishment. National or international recognition earned through competitions, patents, research projects, publications or sporting achievements is also taken into account. In the case of bravery awards, special emphasis is placed on the degree of courage, selflessness and personal risk involved.
As a result, selection is not based merely on certificates or academic performance. The focus remains on identifying children whose achievements have created meaningful impact and demonstrate extraordinary potential.
Recognition Beyond a Medal
For many recipients, the PMRBP becomes a defining milestone in their lives.
Awardees traditionally receive a medal, certificate, citation, ₹1 lakh cash award and book vouchers worth ₹10,000 , according to previous government guidelines. More importantly, they gain national recognition and an opportunity to interact with the country's highest leadership.
Recipients are often invited to participate in events associated with the Republic Day celebrations , providing them with a national platform and exposure that few children receive. The recognition has helped several young achievers gain visibility for their work, attract institutional support, and inspire other children to pursue innovation, service and excellence.
What About Educational Benefits?
For several years, PMRBP winners enjoyed an additional incentive. Eligible recipients who qualified through NEET could compete for a limited number of MBBS and BDS seats under the Central Pool quota maintained by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
However, the Central Government discontinued this benefit from the 2022-23 academic year . Although the Madras High Court later recommended restoring the provision, there is currently no special admission quota available for PMRBP awardees.
Nevertheless, the prestige associated with the award continues to strengthen academic profiles and can prove beneficial while applying for scholarships, fellowships, leadership programmes and other opportunities that value exceptional achievement and public service.
Inspiration from the Telugu States
Children from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have consistently demonstrated the talent and determination celebrated by the PMRBP.
Among the recent examples is Shivani , a para-athlete from Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh , who was selected for the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2025 for her achievements in sports. Previous editions have also seen awardees from Telangana receive national recognition for outstanding accomplishments.
These success stories underscore the vast reservoir of talent that exists across the Telugu states and highlight the importance of identifying deserving candidates from rural and urban communities alike.
A Call to Discover India's Next Young Heroes
With the nomination deadline approaching, the Ministry has urged schools, youth groups, NGOs, panchayats, local bodies and citizens to identify exceptional children and help them complete the application process.
At a time when young Indians are making remarkable contributions in science, technology, sports, environmental conservation, social service and community leadership, the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar serves as a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to excellence.
For many children, the award is more than a medal or a citation. It is national recognition of courage, creativity, compassion and determination. And for India, it is an opportunity to celebrate the next generation of innovators, changemakers and leaders who are already shaping the country's future.
