United States coach Mauricio Pochettino brushed aside concerns following his team's dramatic 3-2 defeat to Turkey , insisting that finishing top of the World Cup group was far more important than the result of a match that had little impact on the Americans' campaign.

Having already secured qualification for the Round of 32 , Pochettino rested several regular starters and fielded a heavily rotated lineup, making nine changes to the side. Eight players were handed their first World Cup start as the coach looked to protect key players ahead of the knockout rounds.

The Americans made a dream start when Auston Trusty scored in the third minute, but Turkey , already eliminated from the tournament, fought back with first half goals from Arda Güler and Orkun Kökçü . The US responded after the break through Sebastian Berhalter , whose powerful strike in the 49th minute restored parity and set up an exciting finish.

Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Kaan Ayhan struck with the final kick in the eighth minute of stoppage time , sealing a morale boosting victory for Turkey.

Despite the defeat, Pochettino was visibly frustrated by suggestions that the result reflected negatively on his side. He reminded reporters that the United States had achieved its primary objective by finishing first in the group, adding that managing the squad and avoiding injuries or suspensions ahead of the knockout stage had been equally important.

The coach also welcomed back Christian Pulisic , who returned from a calf injury as a second half substitute after missing most of the group stage. His appearance provided another positive for the Americans before the high stakes knockout matches begin.

Midfielder Brenden Aaronson admitted the team could have defended better but praised the effort shown by a largely inexperienced lineup against a quality Turkish side. Berhalter also remained upbeat, saying the late defeat would not affect the squad's confidence heading into the next round.

For Turkey , the victory offered a satisfying end to an otherwise disappointing tournament. Coach Vincenzo Montella praised his players' resilience and character, saying they could return home with pride after producing one of their best performances.

The United States will now turn its full attention to its Round of 32 clash against Bosnia-Herzegovina , with Pochettino making it clear that the team's real World Cup challenge is only just beginning.
