Political Showdown Grips Telangana Over Tenders, Debt and Transparency

Telangana witnessed a day of intense political drama on Thursday as the ruling Congress and opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) engaged in a bitter confrontation over alleged corruption in government tenders and the state's debt burden. The dispute, marked by public challenges, police intervention and sharp exchanges between senior leaders, transformed the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial near the Assembly into the centre of the state's political battlefield.

The latest controversy was triggered by allegations from Dr. R.S. Praveen Kumar , who claimed that irregularities worth ₹2,000 crore had occurred in tenders issued for the state's Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions . The Congress government strongly rejected the charge and challenged the opposition to prove the allegations in a public debate.

Responding to the challenge, BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar , SC Development Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar , and Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Azharuddin reached the Martyrs’ Memorial and declared that they were prepared for an open discussion. Addressing the media, Ponnam Prabhakar argued that the allegations lacked credibility, pointing out that the total tender value was around ₹1,143 crore , making claims of a ₹2,000-crore scam impossible.

However, the political confrontation escalated when senior BRS leader and former minister T. Harish Rao attempted to travel from Telangana Bhavan to the memorial to participate in the debate. Heavy police deployment outside the party headquarters prevented his convoy from proceeding, leading to a tense standoff.

Speaking to reporters from inside his vehicle, Harish Rao alleged that he had tried contacting the Congress ministers to facilitate the discussion but received no response. As BRS supporters raised slogans nearby, he announced that he was willing to walk to the venue if necessary. Police later detained him and shifted him from the area, further intensifying the political row.

Questioning the government's actions, Harish Rao asked why he was being stopped if the administration had nothing to hide regarding the tender process. He maintained that a government confident of its position should welcome a transparent public debate.

At the same time, a parallel political battle unfolded over Telangana's finances. Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao renewed his challenge to BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) on the issue of state debt. While KTR has maintained that Telangana's debt during the BRS regime stood at around ₹2.8 lakh crore , Jupally alleged that direct and indirect liabilities accumulated during the previous administration were closer to ₹8 lakh crore .

The issue has become one of the most contentious political debates since the Congress came to power in 2023. The government argues that the previous regime left behind a massive financial burden, while BRS leaders contend that borrowings funded major infrastructure, irrigation and welfare projects across the state.

Adding further momentum to the debate, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy recently proposed a broader public discussion comparing the performance of the Congress government, the decade-long BRS administration and the NDA government at the Centre. The proposal has widened the scope of the political contest beyond individual allegations.

The developments also drew criticism from Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar , who compared the Congress-BRS exchanges to a reality television show. He accused both parties of engaging in political theatrics while avoiding accountability on issues such as governance, corruption, public debt and administrative failures . Calling for a larger public debate involving all major political parties, he asserted that the BJP would place before the people the Centre's contribution to Telangana's development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi .

With accusations, counter-allegations and public challenges continuing to dominate the discourse, Thursday's confrontation underscored the increasingly combative nature of Telangana politics. More importantly, it signaled that the battle over government transparency, fiscal management and political credibility is likely to remain a defining issue in the state's political landscape in the months ahead.
