'Preparation Is Everything': Kuldeep On India's Transition From IPL To Test Cricket
Senior India spinner Kuldeep Yadav has underlined the challenges of switching from the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the demanding world of Test cricket , saying dedicated preparation is crucial ahead of India's one off Test against Afghanistan .
With several Indian players coming straight from a long IPL season, Kuldeep admitted that the transition is never easy. Unlike T20 cricket, where bowlers are constantly on the attack, Test cricket requires patience, discipline and consistency over long periods.
Having had extra time after Delhi Capitals missed the IPL playoffs, Kuldeep spent nearly two weeks training with the red ball to regain his rhythm. He said maintaining the right lengths and adapting to the unique demands of the longest format are key aspects of preparation.
"The batter has a lot more time in Test cricket. Small details like flight, angles, crease position and deception in the air become very important," Kuldeep explained.
The Afghanistan Test will also mark the beginning of a new phase for India's spin attack. For the first time in his Test career, Kuldeep could play without veteran off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin , who has retired, while Ravindra Jadeja has been rested for the match.
Acknowledging their absence, Kuldeep said India would miss both Jadeja and Axar Patel , but expressed confidence in young spinners Harsh Dubey and Manav Suthar , who have impressed through India A tours and domestic red ball competitions.
Now one of the senior members of India's bowling unit, Kuldeep sees his role extending beyond taking wickets. He wants younger players to view him as a partner rather than a mentor, encouraging open discussions about conditions, tactics and match awareness .
With India preparing for a fresh Test challenge and a new generation of spinners waiting in the wings, Kuldeep believes preparation and patience will be the keys to success against Afghanistan.
