President of Spain, HE Mr. Pedro Sánchez, met Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in New Delhi on February 18, 2026 to strengthen diplomatic and bilateral ties between India and Spain. The leaders held discussions on key areas including defence, security, technology, trade, and cultural exchanges , reflecting a comprehensive approach to deepening strategic cooperation.
The meeting coincides with the marking of 2026 as the “India-Spain Year of Culture, Tourism and AI” , aimed at enhancing people-to-people connections and promoting collaboration in education, research, and innovation. A delegation of Spanish universities also visited India, underlining the emphasis on academic and cultural exchange.
In posts on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi described the discussions as productive, highlighting how the historic EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) could boost economic partnership with Spain and create new opportunities for businesses and citizens of both nations. President Sánchez also tweeted in Spanish, stressing the importance of strengthening friendship, bilateral cooperation, and people-to-people ties .
Both leaders expressed optimism about expanding trade, technology, education, and cultural links, while reiterating their commitment to a strategic partnership that benefits both countries .
