Private Bus Crash on NH-16 Leaves Eight Critically Injured

A private intercity bus travelling from Chennai to Visakhapatnam overturned on National Highway-16 near Gannavaram in Krishna district, leaving eight passengers seriously injured and briefly disrupting traffic on one of Andhra Pradesh's busiest highway stretches. The accident, which occurred during the early hours of Tuesday, is believed to have been triggered by a combination of rain-soaked roads and overspeeding, according to preliminary findings.

The mishap took place at around 2.30 a.m. near Pedda Avutapalli village in Unguturu mandal. Police said the bus was carrying more than 25 passengers when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle on the slippery highway. The bus first crashed into the central divider before overturning, leaving several passengers trapped inside the damaged vehicle.

Krishna District Superintendent of Police Vidyasagar Naidu said eight passengers suffered serious injuries and were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, while others escaped with minor injuries. Police, emergency responders and local residents quickly launched rescue operations, helping evacuate passengers and clear the accident site.

The incident also triggered a secondary collision when a light commercial vehicle (LCV) travelling behind the bus attempted to avoid the overturned vehicle but rammed into it. The LCV driver sustained severe injuries to his leg and was admitted to hospital.

Authorities faced an additional challenge after nearly 400 litres of diesel leaked from the bus's fuel tank onto the highway. Police personnel promptly spread sawdust across the affected stretch to absorb the fuel and minimise the risk of fire or skidding. The damaged vehicles were later removed with the help of recovery equipment, allowing traffic on NH-16 to return to normal after a temporary disruption.

Police said a case will be registered under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act. Officials from the Motor Vehicles Department will carry out a detailed technical inspection of the bus to determine whether the crash was caused solely by driver error or if any mechanical failure also contributed to the accident.

The accident once again underscores the importance of speed management during the monsoon, particularly on high-speed national highways. Road safety experts have consistently warned that wet road surfaces significantly reduce tyre grip and braking efficiency, increasing the likelihood of serious crashes when vehicles are driven above safe speeds.
