Protistha Samanta Storms Into CWG Vault Final, Keeps India's Gymnastics Hopes Alive

India's Protistha Samanta produced an encouraging performance to qualify for the women's vault final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, providing the country's gymnastics contingent with a major boost on Saturday.

The 22-year-old gymnast from West Bengal finished fifth in the qualification round after registering a combined score of 13.025 across her two vaults. Her performance secured a place among the top eight finalists, keeping alive India's hopes of a strong finish in one of the Games' most competitive gymnastics events.

While Samanta celebrated qualification, fellow Indian Pranati Nayak narrowly missed a spot in the final. She finished 11th with a score of 12.555, ending the competition as the third reserve. Eshitaa Rewale placed 15th with 11.725, while Nishka Agarwal finished 19th after scoring 11.075.

India also fell short in the women's all-around competition, with Samanta and Rewale finishing 27th and 28th respectively. Their scores of 42.250 and 41.700 left them just outside qualification, placing them third and fourth on the reserve list for the final.

In the women's team competition, India accumulated 123 points to finish ninth overall. The Indian squad had shown promise by sitting fifth after completing all four rotations in Subdivision 3, but slipped down the standings once results from the remaining subdivision were added.

Australia dominated the event to win the gold medal with 158.400 points, while Canada claimed silver with 157.300. England secured the bronze medal after finishing with 154.300.

Under Commonwealth Games rules, only the best three scores from each nation on every apparatus contribute to the team total, while the top eight gymnasts on each apparatus, with a maximum of two athletes from each country, advance to the individual event finals.

With a place in the vault final now secured, Samanta will look to build on her impressive qualifying display as she aims to challenge for a Commonwealth Games medal and deliver another memorable moment for Indian gymnastics.
