PSG Beat Aston Villa 2-1 to Win Back-to-Back UEFA Super Cup Titles

Paris Saint-Germain began their new European campaign with another trophy, defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg on Wednesday to retain the UEFA Super Cup for a second consecutive year.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead in the 20th minute with a stunning finish. Cutting in from the left, the Georgian forward unleashed a powerful rising shot that flew into the near corner, leaving Villa goalkeeper with little chance.

Villa hit back through 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo, who marked his competitive debut with an impressive goal. The teenager met John McGinn's cross with a powerful volley into the roof of the net to level the contest.

Madjo had only recently been cleared to make his Villa debut after a registration dispute. FIFA had initially blocked his transfer from French club Metz because of rules governing international moves involving players under 18. The Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the decision last week.

The youngster continued to trouble PSG's defence and came close to scoring again, hitting the post after powering past Willian Pacho.

PSG eventually restored their advantage in the 61st minute through Désiré Doué. The forward raced onto a pass from Ousmane Dembélé and curled a left-footed effort into the far corner. The goal was initially ruled offside, but VAR showed Villa defender Matty Cash had kept Doué onside, and referee Omar Artan awarded the goal.

Doué had returned to training only on Monday following the World Cup but was handed a starting role by Luis Enrique and delivered the decisive moment.

The victory made PSG the first club since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017 to win consecutive UEFA Super Cups. PSG, who won five trophies last season, will next face Lens in the Trophée des Champions on Sunday.
