PSG Title Celebrations Marred by Violence as Paris Police Detain 45
Celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain's second UEFA Champions League triumph were overshadowed by incidents of violence and disorder across the French capital on Saturday night, leading to dozens of arrests and raising fresh concerns over crowd management during major sporting events .
Thousands of supporters poured into the streets after PSG secured the European title by defeating Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout in the final held in Budapest, Hungary. Large crowds gathered around iconic locations such as the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées , waving flags, setting off flares, and sounding car horns in celebration.
While the majority of fans celebrated peacefully, authorities reported that smaller groups engaged in vandalism , set fires, and damaged businesses in different parts of the city. A bakery and a restaurant were among the properties affected. One police officer was injured during the disturbances.
The Paris police prefecture said a group also attempted to storm a police station in the city's upscale 8th Arrondissement, prompting a swift response from security forces. By 10 p.m., 45 people had been taken into custody .
Police additionally dispersed a crowd that briefly blocked Paris' ring road and cleared makeshift barricades near PSG's home stadium. Around 1,000 people gathered near the venue before being moved on by officers.
The unrest has once again highlighted the crowd management challenges and security concerns that accompany large-scale sporting celebrations. Authorities had remained on alert following similar scenes last year, when PSG's first Champions League title triggered widespread disturbances and hundreds of arrests across France .
Officials are expected to review security arrangements as cities across Europe continue to grapple with balancing public celebrations and public safety during major sporting triumphs.
