The Pakistan Super League could be moved to the January-February window in 2027, as organisers look to avoid the intense commercial competition posed by the Indian Premier League.

The proposal was discussed at a meeting of the PSL Governing Council in London on September 1, after the league’s media rights holder raised concerns about limited advertising and sponsorship opportunities during the April-May period.

The PSL has traditionally been played between February and March since its launch in 2016. However, clashes with major ICC events forced the Pakistan Cricket Board to shift the tournament to April-May in recent years. That placed it directly alongside the IPL, the world’s biggest and most commercially successful T20 league.

According to people familiar with the discussions, Walee Technologies, which owns the PSL’s domestic broadcast and digital rights until 2029, proposed moving the competition to January-February. The company also owns the Rawalpindi franchise, one of two teams added when the PSL expanded from six to eight sides this year.

The broadcaster reportedly told the council that the April-May window was proving difficult from a commercial and sponsorship perspective, with the IPL dominating the cricket market during that period.

Franchise owners have also voiced concerns about declining interest in the PSL following Pakistan’s disappointing performances across formats.

One scheduling proposal involves starting the 2027 tournament in Karachi, where winter conditions are relatively moderate, before moving to Punjab and Peshawar as temperatures become less severe.

Pakistan currently has an international cricket window from mid-November through March, potentially giving the PSL room to return to the earlier part of the year.

The council also discussed entering the esports market and the possibility of staging a mid-year tournament, both aimed at generating additional revenue and keeping the PSL visible beyond its main season.
