Former IPS officer R N Ravi assumed office as the 22nd Governor of West Bengal on Thursday morning in a solemn ceremony at Lok Bhavan . The oath was administered by Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Sujoy Paul , marking the beginning of Ravi’s tenure in the state.

The ceremony was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee , Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee , senior ministers, and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim . Left Front chairman Biman Bose was also present, along with top bureaucrats such as Chief Secretary Nandini Chakravorty and senior police officials. Notably, leaders from the opposition BJP were absent from the event.

Ravi’s appointment follows the resignation of his predecessor, C V Ananda Bose , on March 5. Over the years, Ravi has built a distinguished administrative career, previously serving as the governor of Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tamil Nadu , and bringing extensive experience to the constitutional post in West Bengal.

The new governor, known for his tenure in northeastern states, steps into office at a time when West Bengal continues to navigate a complex political landscape. His administrative acumen and experience in governance are expected to play a key role in maintaining constitutional propriety and facilitating dialogue among various political and bureaucratic stakeholders in the state.

The ceremony underscored the blend of tradition and protocol, reflecting the importance of the governor’s role as a constitutional head and custodian of state governance.
