Rabi Lamichhane Re-elected RSP Chief as Nepal's Ruling Party Unveils New Leadership

Nepal's ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has reaffirmed its confidence in Rabi Lamichhane , unanimously re-electing him as the party's president during its first ever general convention. The move marks a significant milestone for one of Nepal's fastest growing political forces as it seeks to strengthen its organisation and prepare for the next phase of governance.

The week-long convention, which concluded on Friday, brought together nearly 4,000 party members from across the country. Besides re-electing Lamichhane, the party unanimously chose Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle as its vice president, highlighting a united leadership at the top.

The convention also elected Bipin Acharya as the party's general secretary, while Sobita Gautam was chosen as vice president under the women's category. Hari Dhakal, Asim Sah, and Nisha Dangi were elected as joint general secretaries, completing the party's key leadership structure.

The RSP also finalised the first phase of elections for its central committee, selecting 99 members on Thursday. With the election of office bearers on Friday, the party's central body will eventually comprise 158 members , giving the relatively young political outfit a stronger organisational framework.

One of the notable developments to emerge from the convention was the indication that Prime Minister Balendra Shah, popularly known as "Balen," could soon be nominated as the party's senior leader. According to party leaders, the move would honour an earlier understanding reached after Balen agreed to merge his political team with the RSP in December ahead of Nepal's March 5 elections. He subsequently contested the polls on the party's 'Bell' election symbol.

The successful conclusion of the RSP's first general convention reflects the party's efforts to consolidate its leadership and expand its political influence after its rapid rise in Nepal's political landscape. By presenting a largely unanimous leadership team and strengthening its organisational structure, the party aims to project unity and stability as it navigates the country's evolving political environment.

Political observers believe the convention has reinforced the RSP's position as an increasingly influential force in Nepal, with the renewed leadership expected to focus on governance, organisational expansion, and delivering on the promises that helped propel the party into power.
