Rabindranath Tagore’s Restored Garage And Vintage Car Opened To Public In Kolkata
The restored garage and vintage car associated with Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Jorasanko Thakur Bari in Kolkata were opened to the public on Wednesday after a seven month conservation project , adding a new attraction to one of India’s most significant cultural heritage sites.
The renovated heritage space, named ‘Rabindra Smritirath’ , had remained in a neglected state for years, with damage to the garage’s roof, walls and flooring, while vegetation had grown across the premises. The vintage automobile also showed signs of prolonged deterioration before restoration work began.
The conservation initiative involved structural repairs, cleaning, preservation work and professional restoration of the vintage vehicle , while retaining the original character of the historic garage. The restored area now includes upgraded lighting, redesigned decor and a specially created wall painting.
The vehicle, identified as Tagore’s Humber car , has long been among the notable personal artefacts associated with Jorasanko Thakur Bari. Its restoration provides visitors a rare glimpse into the personal life of the poet beyond his literary and artistic contributions.
The project was undertaken with support from Techno India Group , which said the initiative aimed to preserve an important part of Bengal’s cultural heritage for future generations.
Jorasanko Thakur Bari, located in north Kolkata, is the ancestral residence of Tagore, where he was born in 1861, spent a substantial part of his life and breathed his last in 1941. The historic complex, which houses the Rabindra Bharati Museum, remains a symbol of Bengal’s cultural renaissance and Tagore’s enduring national legacy.
