Rain Delays Opposition's Big Move Against CEC! INDIA Bloc Reschedules Public Impeachment to Today
The opposition INDIA bloc has rescheduled its planned “ public impeachment ” of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar to October 31 after continuous rainfall disrupted arrangements in the national capital. The symbolic proceedings will now take place at 2:30 pm at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence at 10 Rajaji Marg, with former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar set to chair the event.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will move the symbolic motion against the CEC, while Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will deliver the concluding address before the motion is put to a vote. Representatives of participating INDIA bloc parties are also expected to speak, with one speaker from each party.
The decision to postpone the programme was announced on Friday after opposition leaders held discussions at Kharge’s residence. Rahul Gandhi said the decision had been taken unanimously, adding that the proceedings would follow the same format on the revised date.
The INDIA bloc plans to bring together representatives of 21 political parties, civil society members and people who claim to have been affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The gathering is expected to highlight allegations of arbitrary voter deletions, irregularities in the revision exercise and concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission.
The public impeachment is part of a wider opposition campaign against alleged “ vote chori ”. The INDIA bloc has also announced a ‘ Chalo Dilli ’ march on November 1, beginning at noon from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction and ending at Ramlila Maidan.
Rahul Gandhi has urged students, workers and citizens across political affiliations to participate in the march, which is intended to press for electoral accountability and Kumar’s resignation.
