At least eight people were killed and 24 others injured after a private sleeper bus collided with a truck and caught fire on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Dausa district in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.

The accident took place around 2:30–3:00 am near Dhanawda village under Kolwa police station limits. Officials said the bus, carrying around 35–37 passengers , was travelling from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Indore when it rammed into a truck/trailer moving ahead on the high-speed corridor.

According to Dausa Superintendent of Police Piyush Dixit, six passengers were burnt alive on the spot , while two others died due to severe head injuries sustained in the collision. At least 14 of the injured are undergoing treatment , while several remain in critical condition.

The impact of the crash reportedly caused the bus to lose control , and in some accounts, it veered off the carriageway , after which both vehicles caught fire. The blaze spread rapidly, leaving little time for evacuation and trapping several passengers inside.

Doctors at the Dausa district hospital said six bodies were burnt beyond recognition , and DNA testing will be required for identification.

Eyewitness accounts from survivors indicated that most passengers were asleep at the time of the crash , raising concerns over possible factors such as driver fatigue and high speed , though officials have not confirmed the cause and a probe is underway.

A woman survivor said her family was returning after a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi , when the accident occurred, while another survivor described how passengers were suddenly jolted awake as the bus hit the truck and quickly caught fire.

One of the deceased has been identified as Dharmendra , while efforts are on to confirm the identities of others.

Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

Fire services, police, and local administration teams carried out rescue and recovery operations after controlling the blaze. Authorities are continuing efforts to identify victims and assist the injured.
