Rajnath Singh to Lay Foundation for 10,000-Ton Aluminium Manufacturing Facility in Nagpur
In a significant step towards strengthening India's defence manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will perform the bhoomi pujan for a 10,000-ton aluminium extrusion press at Yantra India Limited (YIL) in Nagpur Today.
The project, coming up at the Ordnance Factory, Ambajhari , is being viewed as a major milestone in India's journey towards defence self-reliance. Once operational, the facility will enhance the country's ability to manufacture large, high-strength and precision aluminium alloy extrusions that are crucial for the defence and aerospace sectors.
According to officials, the proposed extrusion press will serve as a strategic national asset, helping India develop critical manufacturing capabilities within the country. At present, several specialised aluminium extruded components used in defence platforms rely on imports. The new facility is expected to significantly reduce that dependence while ensuring a more secure and reliable domestic supply chain.
The initiative aligns closely with the Centre's Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, which aims to promote indigenous production across key sectors, particularly defence. By enabling the domestic manufacture of advanced aluminium components, the project is expected to strengthen India's defence ecosystem and support the growing demand for locally produced military hardware and aerospace equipment.
An aluminium extrusion press is a highly specialised industrial machine that shapes heated aluminium by forcing it through precision-engineered dies. The process allows manufacturers to produce components with specific dimensions, strength characteristics and complex designs, making them indispensable for modern defence and aerospace applications.
The foundation ceremony is expected to be attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar , highlighting the importance attached to the project by both the Centre and the state government.
As India continues to expand its indigenous defence manufacturing base, the establishment of this advanced facility in Nagpur is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing technological capabilities, reducing import dependence and reinforcing the country's long-term strategic autonomy.
