Former Cuban President Raúl Castro’s absence from Cuba’s annual July 26 revolution anniversary ceremony drew attention as the country marked the 73rd anniversary of the Moncada Barracks attack amid worsening economic troubles and renewed tensions with the United States.

The 95 year old Castro skipped the traditional rally for the first time in at least three decades, with authorities giving no explanation. President Miguel Díaz Canel read a congratulatory message from Castro during the event in Pinar del Río, maintaining his symbolic presence despite his withdrawal from official roles.

The July 26 anniversary commemorates the failed 1953 assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks led by Fidel and Raúl Castro against dictator Fulgencio Batista. Though unsuccessful, the attack became the starting point of the revolution that overthrew Batista in 1959.

Díaz Canel used the ceremony to reject a US State Department report accusing Cuba of running a decades-long espionage and influence network. “Every day they issue a threat against the revolution, and every week they announce a new punishment for Cuban companies and officials,” he said.

The Cuban president accused Washington of pursuing “maximum pressure” through sanctions and energy restrictions, blaming them for 20 hour blackouts, fuel shortages, reduced industrial output, inflation and shortages of medicines.

The anniversary came as Havana Washington relations remained tense, with Cuba also facing US allegations against Raúl Castro over the 1996 downing of civilian aircraft, which the Cuban government rejected.

Although Castro’s absence remains unexplained, it has highlighted questions over Cuba’s leadership future as the island faces one of its toughest crises in decades.
