Real Madrid Chief Florentino Perez Faces First Contested Election in 20 Years
For the first time in two decades, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez will face an opponent in a club election, setting up a rare leadership contest at one of world football's most successful institutions.
The election, scheduled for Sunday, pits the 79-year-old Perez against 37-year-old businessman Enrique Riquelme , who has emerged as an unexpected challenger to the long-serving president's dominance.
Perez has overseen Real Madrid during one of the most successful periods in its history. Across his two spells in charge, the club has won seven UEFA Champions League titles , multiple La Liga crowns , and established itself as one of the world's most valuable sports brands. Since returning to power in 2009, he has repeatedly secured re-election without opposition.
Riquelme , a renewable energy executive, has sought to energise voters with ambitious promises and the support of former club legends Raúl González , Iker Casillas , and Fernando Hierro . His campaign has focused on greater transparency, sporting reforms, and high-profile transfer targets.
Among his boldest claims is that Erling Haaland could be brought to Madrid if he wins the election. However, both Manchester City and Haaland's representatives have publicly dismissed the possibility. Riquelme has also expressed interest in signing Spanish midfielder Rodri and giving former players significant roles in the club's structure.
Perez has responded by highlighting his proven record and hinting at a major transfer move worth more than 150 million euros after the election. His reputation was built on delivering marquee signings such as Luis Figo , Zinedine Zidane , Cristiano Ronaldo , and Kylian Mbappe .
While Perez remains the favourite, Sunday's vote represents a significant moment for the club. It offers members a choice between continuity under one of football's most influential administrators and a new direction under a younger challenger seeking to reshape Real Madrid's future .
