Reckless and Deeply Concerning: Starmer Slams Russian Warship Over UK Yacht Incident

The UK government is investigating a maritime incident after a Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots near a UK-registered yacht Bright Future in the English Channel , raising concerns over naval safety in busy international waters.

The incident occurred around 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight , in foggy conditions and outside UK territorial waters. According to Russian authorities, the yacht allegedly approached the warship on a “dangerous course,” coming within about 150 metres of the vessel. The Russian side said its crew first attempted radio contact and used warning horns and flares before firing warning shots when the perceived risk of collision continued.

The yacht, carrying two British civilians on a cross-Channel voyage, was later confirmed to be safe. No injuries or damage were reported.

The Royal Navy deployed patrol vessels HMS Tyne and HMS Mersey to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of the yacht and its occupants during the incident.

The Ministry of Defence said it is reviewing all available evidence, including tracking data, communications, and witness accounts, to determine the exact sequence of events. Officials stressed that there is currently no indication of escalation or any physical damage linked to the encounter.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, calling it “reckless and deeply concerning,” while Downing Street said the episode highlights broader concerns over maritime interactions involving Russian naval assets in European waters.

Authorities continue to treat the case as an isolated incident while maintaining close coordination with allied partners and monitoring Russian naval activity in the region. Further findings are expected as the investigation continues.
