Record Breaker! Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Smashes Fastest List A Fifty in Just 11 Balls
Indian cricket's newest sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered another reminder of his extraordinary talent, smashing the fastest fifty in List A cricket history during a breathtaking innings in the tri-series final against Sri Lanka A on Sunday.
The 15-year-old left-hander tore into the Sri Lankan bowling attack from the very first over, racing to a half-century in just 11 balls and eclipsing a record that had stood untouched for more than two decades. The previous mark belonged to Sri Lanka's Kaushalya Weeraratne , who had reached the milestone in 12 deliveries in 2005.
What followed was an exhibition of fearless strokeplay that left spectators and bowlers alike stunned. Sooryavanshi eventually fell for a sensational 94 off just 29 balls , an innings decorated with 10 fours and eight towering sixes , but not before pushing the boundaries of what seemed possible in List A cricket.
The teenager came agonisingly close to another historic achievement. Chasing the record for the fastest List A century, jointly held by Australia's Jake Fraser-McGurk , Sooryavanshi looked destined to get there before being caught at mid-off in the ninth over with India A cruising at 132 runs. One more scoring stroke could have seen him equal the record.
From the moment he walked to the crease, Sooryavanshi signalled his intentions. His first five deliveries yielded two sixes and three fours , immediately putting Sri Lanka A under immense pressure. The youngster attacked every area of the ground with remarkable confidence, dispatching both good and bad deliveries with equal ease.
Particularly impressive was his clean hitting through and over the off side. His effortless lofted drives over extra cover became a recurring feature of the innings, while his power down the ground showcased a maturity rarely seen in a player of his age.
The landmark fifty arrived in spectacular fashion as he launched pacer Dulaj Samuditha for consecutive sixes straight down the ground. By then, the contest had already swung heavily in India's favour.
The knock carried added significance because Sooryavanshi had not registered a major score during the league stage of the tournament. However, on the biggest occasion of the series, he produced an innings that will be remembered as one of the most explosive ever witnessed in List A cricket.
Already earmarked for India's upcoming tours of Ireland and England following his stunning performances in the IPL playoffs, Sooryavanshi continues to strengthen his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in world cricket.
His latest assault in Dambulla was not just about records. It was a statement of intent from a teenager rapidly emerging as one of Indian cricket's brightest stars, proving once again that age is merely a number when extraordinary talent meets fearless ambition.
