India’s veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh scripted a landmark moment in Rotterdam on Sunday, equalling former captain Dilip Tirkey ’s record of 412 international appearances for the country. However, the milestone celebration was overshadowed as India went down narrowly 2-3 to the Netherlands in a closely contested FIH Men’s Pro League encounter.

The Dutch side struck early through Miles Bukkens in the 3rd minute before India responded quickly, with Dilpreet Singh restoring parity in the 9th minute. The hosts regained control when Koen Bijen converted in the 23rd minute, but India once again fought back, this time through Sukhjeet Singh in the 33rd minute to level the contest.

The decisive blow came in the 40th minute when Timjen Reyenga found the net, sealing victory for the Netherlands and denying India at least a share of the points despite two determined comebacks.

For Manpreet, the match marked a rare personal landmark as he became only the active player to feature in over 400 international matches, further underlining his longevity and consistency at the highest level of the sport.

Hockey India officials lauded the achievement. Dilip Tirkey , now President of Hockey India, praised Manpreet’s dedication and impact on Indian hockey, calling the milestone a reflection of his commitment and discipline over the years. Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh also highlighted Manpreet’s leadership and influence in India’s rise on the global stage.

Despite the defeat, India’s fighting spirit stood out, but defensive lapses at crucial moments proved costly as the Netherlands held firm to secure a 3-2 win.
