Red Letter Day: Leclerc Wins First, Ferrari Wins Second – Chaos at Silverstone
Charles Leclerc claimed his maiden British Grand Prix victory with a composed drive at Silverstone on Sunday, giving Ferrari a major boost in the Formula One championship after a race filled with late drama and an unusual finish behind the Safety Car .
Leclerc stayed close to pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli in the opening laps before taking control in the second half of the 52-lap race . A Virtual Safety Car , triggered after Nico Hülkenberg's Audi stopped with a mechanical issue, briefly interrupted proceedings but failed to affect Ferrari's strategy as Leclerc maintained his lead.
The race's defining moment came in the closing laps when Max Verstappen spun into the gravel at Stowe, ending his podium challenge and prompting a full Safety Car . Although race control initially looked set to restart the race for a final-lap sprint, the Safety Car was redeployed moments later, resulting in the Grand Prix finishing under caution.
George Russell recovered from a slow puncture to finish second for Mercedes, while Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in third despite serving a five-second penalty for a false start. His podium remained provisional as stewards investigated an alleged yellow-flag infringement.
It was a disappointing afternoon for championship leader Kimi Antonelli , who slipped from contention after running wide, damaging his front wing and receiving a track-limits penalty , eventually finishing 10th . Lance Stroll also received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.
With Verstappen failing to finish and Antonelli dropping down the order, Ferrari emerged as the biggest winner of the weekend . The provisional top three were Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) , George Russell (Mercedes) and Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), while the official classification remained subject to confirmation pending the stewards' verdict.
The Formula One World Championship resumes with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps from July 17-19 .
