Renowned Actor Kakarala Satyanarayana’s Maoist Daughter Samatha Surrenders
Senior CPI (Maoist) leader Kakarala Samatha alias Madhavi has surrendered before Telangana Director General of Police C.V. Anand, in a significant development that further weakens the banned outfit’s network in the state.
Samatha, a State Committee member, was involved in overseeing the Maoist organisation’s activities concerning women’s issues, intelligence gathering and propaganda in urban areas. Police said she decided to abandon the underground movement and return to mainstream society, citing her desire to give up violence.
A native of Rajamahendravaram in Andhra Pradesh, Samatha comes from a family with links to the Telugu film industry. Her father, Kakarala Satyanarayana, was a noted actor who appeared in around 300 films. He moved from Rajamahendravaram to Chennai in 1960.
Samatha joined the CPI (ML) People’s War in 1985 after discontinuing her Intermediate studies in Chennai. She rose to the position of Area Committee Member (ACM) in 1991 and was subsequently moved to Hyderabad to work as a Central Organiser.
Her responsibilities expanded over the years. In 2015, she was shifted to urban areas under the South Regional Bureau, where she handled women-related issues along with intelligence and propaganda operations.
As part of the state’s surrender and rehabilitation policy, DGP C.V. Anand handed Samatha a ₹20 lakh reward cheque and provided ₹25,000 in immediate financial assistance. The government’s rehabilitation framework is aimed at helping former Maoists rebuild their lives after leaving the armed movement.
265 Maoist Cadres Surrender in 2026
Samatha’s surrender comes amid a major increase in defections from the Maoist ranks in Telangana. According to police, 265 Maoist cadres have surrendered in the state so far in 2026, while security forces have recovered 238 firearms during the same period.
The latest figures follow several significant surrender operations earlier this year. A large group of cadres, including senior-level functionaries, had surrendered in March, handing over a substantial quantity of weapons and ammunition.
Police have also said that the surrender of cadres has helped security agencies obtain information about Maoist networks, weapons and explosive caches in areas along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border.
Authorities now estimate that only three active underground cadres from Telangana are operating with Maoist groups outside the state. Among them is Muppala Lakshmana Rao alias Ganapathi, a CPI (Maoist) Central Committee member.
The continuing surrenders indicate the shrinking organisational and armed presence of the Maoist movement in Telangana. Alongside security operations, the state government has been promoting rehabilitation and reintegration to encourage remaining underground cadres to abandon violence and return to civilian life.
