RGV Announces 'Police Company' With Harshvardhan Rane As Daya Nayak

Ram Gopal Varma has surprised fans with the sudden announcement of his next film, Police Company, even as many were waiting for an update on Syndicate. The filmmaker has teamed up with T-Series for the crime thriller and revealed three stills of Harshvardhan Rane, who will play the lead.

The film comes with the tagline, “It Is More Dangerous Than D Company.” Varma also explained the thought behind the title. According to him, the police is an institution, while an underworld company is built to make money. But when an institution gets extra powers, he believes it can slowly turn into a “company”.

The story is inspired by the Mumbai Police special squad that took on the underworld between 1997 and 2004. Varma claims the squad killed more than 300 gangsters during those years. The film will focus on the squad and one of its best known members, Daya Nayak, with Harshvardhan Rane playing the character.

Varma has also gone back to the events that created the setting for the story. He recalled how Dawood Ibrahim eliminated many rival gangs, expanded D Company and later moved to Dubai, leaving his protege Chhota Rajan to handle its operations. Their eventual split created a power vacuum in Mumbai’s underworld.

Several gangs then tried to take control, leading to a sharp rise in crime. Varma also said the situation attracted young men from states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar to join underworld groups. As the police struggled to control the violence, the special squad was formed.

Police Company is not the first film connected to Daya Nayak’s story. His life has earlier inspired projects including Ab Tak Chhappan, Kagaar, Encounter Daya Nayak and the Telugu film Golimaar.

The film will feature a huge ensemble cast, but the other actors have not been announced yet. The makers have also not revealed a release date.

For Varma, the project marks another return to the crime world that once defined his cinema through films such as Satya and Company. This time, however, the story puts the police squad at the centre of Mumbai’s underworld war.
