Roberto Mancini Returns as Italy Coach, Eyes World Cup Revival

Roberto Mancini has returned as Italy's head coach, offering an emotional apology for his dramatic exit in 2023 as he embarks on the daunting task of reviving the Azzurri after their unprecedented failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for a third straight time.

In his first public remarks since being reappointed, the 61-year-old admitted leaving Italy for the Saudi Arabia national team was a mistake, comparing it to "losing the woman of your life." Mancini accepted full responsibility for the manner of his departure, saying the lack of communication with former federation president Gabriele Gravina was "completely my fault."

"I'm very sorry," Mancini said, adding that he hopes to "bring the national team back where it belongs."

Italy's decision to reappoint Mancini comes after a turbulent period that saw the four-time World Cup champions miss another World Cup following a playoff defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The setback triggered the resignations of Gravina and coach Gennaro Gattuso, prompting the Italian Football Federation to turn back to the man who delivered its last major triumph.

Mancini previously rebuilt Italy after their failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, transforming the side into UEFA Euro 2020 champions with a penalty shootout victory over England. During that remarkable spell, Italy also recorded a world-record 37-match unbeaten run, restoring their status among Europe's elite.

His second tenure, however, presents an even greater challenge. Beyond rebuilding confidence, Mancini has stressed the need to strengthen Italy's youth development pathway, urging clubs to give more opportunities to domestic players and secure the national team's long-term future.

Mancini's first game back in charge will be against Belgium in the UEFA Nations League on September 25 at Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Acknowledging that many supporters remain disappointed by his departure, he admitted some fans may never forgive him, but believes consistent performances and positive results can help Italy reclaim its place among world football's elite.
