Cristiano Ronaldo returned to club football amid controversy surrounding his Portugal commitments and made an immediate impact, scoring the opening goal in Al-Nassr’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League on Friday.

The win lifted Al-Nassr level on points with league leaders Al-Qadsiah after eight rounds, with the defending champions trailing on goal difference. For Ronaldo, the match offered a timely return to scoring form after a turbulent international break that had drawn attention to his relationship with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old forward opened the scoring midway through the first half, capitalising on a rebound after Kingsley Coman’s effort from outside the penalty area was blocked by goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah. Ronaldo reacted quickest to fire home from close range, taking his career tally to 980 goals and moving closer to the unprecedented milestone of 1,000.

The hosts strengthened their advantage just before half-time when Samu Costa found the net. Coman, who had helped create the opening goal, completed the 3-0 victory with 13 minutes remaining to ensure Al-Nassr collected all three points.

Ronaldo’s return came after a contentious international window in which he walked out of the Portugal squad. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, alleged in a lengthy statement published on Tuesday that Jesus had not honoured his word regarding when the striker would feature in the Nations League.

The dispute attracted particular attention because Jesus also coaches Al-Nassr, where Ronaldo helped the club win the Saudi Arabian league title in May. The latest victory allowed the Portuguese superstar to shift the focus back to his performances on the pitch, even as questions surrounding his international commitments remained.

Al-Nassr’s title rivals Al-Qadsiah had earlier strengthened their position with a commanding 5-0 win over Al-Kholood. Dutch international Tijjani Reijnders opened the scoring, while Italy’s Mateo Retegui and Mexico’s Julian Quinones also got on the scoresheet.

With the race at the top remaining tight, Al-Nassr will look to build on the emphatic win as Ronaldo continues his pursuit of the 1,000-goal mark.
