Rs 15,300 Crore Investments, 10,000 Jobs: Vijay's UK Tour Boosts Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's UK visit has secured investment proposals and commitments worth more than Rs 15,300 crore, with the projects expected to generate direct and indirect employment for over 10,000 people, officials said on Tuesday.

The agreements were signed on September 14 in London between Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state's investment promotion agency, and global companies in the presence of Vijay. The MoUs cover key sectors including automotive components, research and development, renewable energy, power equipment and Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

The largest commitment came from Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd, which plans to invest around Rs 11,000 crore to expand its design, engineering, manufacturing, integration and logistics facilities across Tamil Nadu. The expansion is expected to create nearly 7,000 jobs.

UK-based Wilson Power Solutions will invest Rs 300 crore in the next phase of its transformer manufacturing operations in Tiruvallur, creating 400 jobs. Sweden's Sigma Technology Group signed an agreement to expand its centres in Tiruchirappalli and Chennai, generating 600 high-value jobs.

Ernst & Young (EY) signed an MoU to establish a GCC for an international company under a Build-Operate-Transform-Transfer model. The facility on Chennai's Mount-Poonamallee Road GCC corridor involves Rs 1,000 crore and is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs.

A leading European auto component manufacturer also submitted a Letter of Intent for its first Indian manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, with a proposed investment of Rs 3,000 crore.

During the visit, Hinduja Group executives briefed Vijay on progress of their Rs 2,500 crore MoU signed at the VETTRI investors meet in August and expressed interest in expanding renewable energy investments, particularly wind power.

Vijay also urged businesses to leverage the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement to expand trade, investment and raw material sourcing with Tamil Nadu.
