RTC Bus Catches Fire Near Visakhapatnam Bus Station, No Casualties

A major mishap was averted in Visakhapatnam on Saturday when an APSRTC bus was completely gutted by fire shortly after all its passengers had safely disembarked at the Dwaraka Bus Station.

The incident occurred near the bus station as the vehicle, which had completed its overnight journey, was being taken towards the Waltair depot. Officials said the situation could have been serious had the fire broken out while passengers were still on board.

According to APSRTC Visakhapatnam Regional Manager Appalanayudu, the Zone-3 bus belonging to the Nellore-1 depot began its journey at around 5 pm on Friday. After travelling through the night, it reached Dwaraka Bus Station at about 7 am on Saturday.

All passengers got off the bus after it reached the station, while the material being carried as part of the parcel service was also unloaded. The empty bus was subsequently driven towards the Waltair depot, where accommodation facilities are available for Zone-3 staff to rest.

While the bus was on its way, the driver noticed smoke coming from the vehicle. He immediately pulled over to the side of the road and alerted the concerned officials.

The incident was brought to the notice of the local Assistant Engineer, Assistant Manager and Depot Manager. Fire services were also alerted promptly, following which fire engines reached the spot.

Despite the quick response, the flames spread rapidly and engulfed the vehicle. The engine and the entire bus were destroyed in the fire.

Since the passengers and parcel material had already been safely removed, the incident resulted in no loss of life. Officials said the timely evacuation of the passengers helped prevent what could otherwise have turned into a major tragedy.
