Kurukshetra physician Dr. Som Nath Sethi has once again proven that age is no barrier to endurance and discipline by completing his 340th marathon at the age of 74. He crossed the finish line at the New Delhi Marathon held on February 22 , securing third place in the 70-plus age category after covering the full 42.2-kilometre distance .

The internationally certified event, recognised by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), witnessed participation from more than 30,000 runners from over 31 countries . Dr. Sethi’s performance stood out as a remarkable example of perseverance and lifelong commitment to fitness.

Speaking after the race, Dr. Sethi said that completing the marathon with discipline mattered more than winning medals. “Age is only a number if one remains mentally strong and determined,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of consistency and self-belief in maintaining long-term fitness.

Recalling one of the toughest phases of his life, Dr. Sethi shared that he met with a serious accident during a run in 2011 , fracturing both bones of his left leg, his left knee and six ribs . He underwent surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and remained bedridden for nearly three months. At the time, doctors had told him that normal walking might be the best possible recovery .

However, driven by determination and strict discipline , he gradually returned to running and resumed marathon training. Over the years, he has suffered more than 20 fractures but continues to compete in long-distance races .

Dr. Sethi attributes his fitness to a structured lifestyle that includes seven to nine hours of sleep daily, avoiding junk food and alcohol, and following a vegetarian diet. He believes that fitness is built through daily effort, not occasional motivation.

Emphasising the role of medical professionals, he said doctors should lead by example and promote preventive healthcare. “Many lifestyle diseases can be avoided through discipline in everyday routines,” he noted.

His journey continues to inspire people across age groups to adopt healthier habits and view physical fitness as a lifelong pursuit rather than a short-term goal.
