Russell Leads Azerbaijan GP Qualifying, Leclerc Second and Piastri Third

George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a commanding qualifying performance at the Baku City Circuit on Friday, putting Mercedes at the front of the grid for Saturday’s race.

Russell produced a 1:42.526 lap in Q3 to finish 0.837 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri took third, just 0.001 seconds behind Leclerc.

The pole capped a strong weekend start for Russell, who had also shown impressive pace in practice. He will share the front row with Leclerc when the Azerbaijan GP gets underway on Saturday.

Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar delivered one of the surprises of qualifying by taking fourth, ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris in fifth. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton qualified sixth, followed by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and championship contender Max Verstappen in eighth.

Verstappen’s session was affected by traffic and yellow flags as he struggled to match the leading pace.

Williams enjoyed a notable result as Carlos Sainz qualified ninth, reaching Q3 for the first time this season. His teammate Alex Albon will start 13th.

Russell’s Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli suffered a major setback, crashing at Turn 1 early in Q1. The incident prevented him from improving his time, leaving him 16th on the provisional grid.

The qualifying session also saw both Audi drivers eliminated in Q1, while Fernando Alonso qualified 19th.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be held on Saturday, with the race scheduled to start at 4:30 pm IST. The 51-lap contest on Baku’s 6.003-km street circuit is expected to put a premium on tyre management, overtaking opportunities and race strategy.

Russell will now look to convert his pole into a strong result as the Mercedes driver leads the field into the race.
