Russell Wins Azerbaijan GP, Edges Verstappen by 0.196s as Antonelli Rises to Fifth

George Russell held off a late challenge from Max Verstappen to win a dramatic Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli recovered from a disastrous qualifying session to finish fifth.

Russell, starting from pole, controlled much of the race before two Safety Car periods brought Verstappen back into contention. The Mercedes driver eventually crossed the line just 0.196 seconds ahead of Verstappen, securing his third victory of the 2026 season.

Verstappen finished second as Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar completed the podium on his return from a wrist injury that had kept him out of the previous three races. Hadjar's third-place finish came after he qualified fourth on Friday.

The race also delivered a major boost for Antonelli. The Mercedes driver crashed at Turn 1 in Q1 and started from 16th, but fought his way through the field to finish fifth. His result limited the damage in the championship, with Russell reducing Antonelli's lead to 66 points.

McLaren endured a difficult afternoon. Lando Norris retired after becoming involved in a Turn 1 incident, while Oscar Piastri dropped out of podium contention and eventually finished 14th. Six drivers failed to finish the race.

The Baku race was held on a Saturday this year because Sunday coincided with Azerbaijan's Remembrance Day. The 6.003-km street circuit is known for its combination of long, high-speed straights and the narrow section around the Old City, with Safety Car interventions a regular feature.

The Azerbaijan GP also marked the start of a triple-header. Formula 1 now heads to Malaysia for the Bahrain Grand Prix, scheduled for October 2-4 at Sepang, before the Singapore Grand Prix from October 9-11. The Malaysian event is officially listed as the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia 2026 after the calendar change.

With eight rounds remaining, Mercedes continues to lead the constructors' championship, while Antonelli's reduced advantage over Russell adds another layer of intrigue to the title battle heading into the final stretch of the season.
