Russia Pounds Kyiv and Kharkiv, Historic Monastery Damaged, Five Rescuers Killed
A massive Russian missile and drone assault struck multiple parts of Ukraine early Monday, killing five emergency responders in the northeastern city of Kharkiv and causing significant damage in the capital Kyiv , where a centuries-old religious landmark was set ablaze.
According to Ukrainian officials, the five rescuers lost their lives when a second Russian strike hit the area while they were battling a fire caused by an earlier attack in Kharkiv. Several other emergency workers were injured in what authorities described as a devastating example of repeated strikes targeting rescue operations.
In Kyiv, residents woke to the sound of powerful explosions as waves of ballistic missiles and Shahed drones targeted the city. Air raid sirens echoed across the capital, sending thousands of people rushing to underground shelters as officials urged citizens to remain in safe locations.
Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said Kyiv bore the brunt of the attack, with extensive damage reported to civilian infrastructure. At least 13 people, including a child, sought medical treatment following the strikes.
The attacks triggered fires and destruction across several neighborhoods. Authorities reported that a 25-storey residential building was hit in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district , while a market and grocery store also caught fire. In the Obolonskyi district , a nine-storey apartment block suffered a direct strike, adding to the growing toll on residential areas.
Ukrainian officials accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian buildings. They argued that the repeated attacks on residential neighborhoods reflected a broader strategy aimed at creating fear and disruption among the civilian population.
Among the most significant incidents was the damage inflicted on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra , one of Ukraine's most important religious and cultural sites. A major fire broke out within the historic complex, with flames reported on the roof of the Dormition Cathedral , a centerpiece of the monastery.
Metropolitan Epiphanius , head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, condemned the strike and appealed for prayers to protect the landmark. He described the attack as a blow not only to Ukraine but also to Christian heritage and world history.
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra , often known as the Monastery of the Caves , is a treasured spiritual center that dates back to the 11th century. The sprawling complex features churches, monasteries and an extensive network of underground caves stretching hundreds of metres beneath the site. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , it has attracted pilgrims and visitors from across the world for centuries.
The latest assault comes amid continuing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities , highlighting the ongoing intensity of the conflict. With civilian infrastructure, residential buildings and cultural landmarks increasingly caught in the crossfire, concerns continue to grow over the human and historical cost of the war .
