Russia Pounds Kyiv With Massive Drone And Missile Barrage As Trump Pushes Energy Truce
Russia unleashed another massive wave of drone and missile attacks across Ukraine on Wednesday, killing at least four people, including a child, and hitting energy infrastructure around Kyiv as US President Donald Trump pushes Moscow and Kyiv towards a reciprocal halt in attacks on energy facilities ahead of winter.
Ukraine said Russia launched 188 drones, including 86 jet-powered models, along with Zircon, Oniks and Iskander missiles. The Air Force said 155 drones and five missiles were shot down or suppressed. More than 100 drones were launched by Wednesday, including 29 jet-powered models, 18 of which were intercepted.
Three people were killed in Kyiv and another near the capital, while at least four were wounded. A child was killed after a private home in Vyshhorod was hit. Multiple fires broke out, damaging homes, warehouses and other buildings, while ballistic missile warnings sent residents into shelters.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region was among the main targets. A power outage was reported in Bucha, where officials also reported damage to 11 vehicles, two warehouses and three homes.
Russia said its strikes targeted a communication centre and energy facilities around Kyiv, port infrastructure at Izmail and two data centres. Moscow also claimed attacks on military cargo vessels in the Black Sea and Odessa. The Russian Defence Ministry said more than 1,400 Ukrainian troops were killed across several front sectors in the previous 24 hours, a claim that could not be independently verified.
Ukraine says Russia is increasingly deploying faster, higher-flying jet-powered drones that are harder to intercept. Kyiv is seeking more ammunition and Patriot missiles, while Belgium says it will transfer three F-16s to Ukraine by year-end.
Trump has proposed that Russia and Ukraine stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure. Kyiv has agreed in principle if Moscow reciprocates, while Russia says it wants a broader peace settlement rather than a temporary truce. A Kyiv Independent report said Trump privately doubts Putin will agree, although envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner reportedly see scope for a deal.
The escalation also spilled towards NATO territory. Two Spanish F-18s were scrambled after an unidentified aerial target was detected near Ukraine’s border with Romania. Romania reported no airspace breach.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Europe and Britain of waging war against Russia, while EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas backed stronger measures against Russian hybrid threats and its shadow fleet.
