Russian Air defences foil drone strike on Moscow, Major Airports suspended
Russian air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 16 Ukrainian drones that were heading toward the capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Saturday, as cross-border aerial attacks linked to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War continue to intensify.
In a statement on social media, Sobyanin said emergency services were dispatched to areas where drone debris fell. He did not immediately report any casualties or major damage , but noted that response teams were assessing the situation on the ground.
The attempted strike triggered major disruptions to aviation in the capital region. According to Russian media reports, operations were temporarily suspended at three of Moscow’s four main airports Vnukovo International Airport , Domodedovo International Airport and Zhukovsky International Airport forcing flight delays and diversions for several hours before services gradually resumed.
Authorities also imposed precautionary communication restrictions. Mobile internet services were selectively disabled in parts of Moscow and the surrounding region to reduce the risk of drones using civilian networks for navigation or coordination. Residents were advised to rely on offline applications, Wi-Fi, or VoWiFi for essential communication.
Regional Transport and Information Technology officials warned of “temporary difficulties” with mobile connectivity, describing the measures as federally mandated security precautions . Officials said contingency systems had been prepared to ensure continued access to critical public services during any future aerial threat.
The incident comes amid a noticeable escalation in long-range drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine. In recent months, Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted military facilities, energy infrastructure and strategic sites deep inside Russian territory, including areas around Moscow, while Russia has intensified missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities .
Security analysts say such attacks demonstrate both sides’ growing reliance on unmanned aerial warfare as the conflict grinds on with no immediate diplomatic breakthrough in sight. The expanding use of drones has brought the war’s impact closer to civilian populations far from the front lines.
Russian authorities have not disclosed the launch location of the drones, and Ukraine typically does not comment on specific operations inside Russian territory. However, officials in Moscow indicated that defensive readiness remains high amid expectations of further attempted strikes.
As the conflict enters another volatile phase, disruptions to transport, communications and daily life in major urban centres underscore the widening reach of the war and the increasing risks of escalation.
