Rybakina Reigns Supreme! World No. 1 Crushes Fernandez to Defend Ningbo Title
Elena Rybakina capped a memorable week by defeating Canada's Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-2 in the final to defend her Ningbo Open title, securing her first victory since becoming world No. 1 and her 15th career singles title.
The 27-year-old Kazakh dominated the championship match, breaking Fernandez early in both sets and producing 24 winners to complete a commanding victory at the WTA 500 tournament in China. The win also extended her impressive run this season, taking her tour-leading title tally to four, including triumphs at the Australian Open and US Open.
Rybakina had entered the final after beating Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals, where she faced a tougher challenge, needing 11 set points to close out the opening set. Fernandez had secured her place in the title clash with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Marie Bouzkova.
However, the final proved far more straightforward for the defending champion, who controlled proceedings against Fernandez and showed why she has emerged as one of the dominant players on the women's tour.
Calling Ningbo a special place, Rybakina thanked her team, family, sponsors and fans following the victory. The title defence marked another milestone in a season that has strengthened her position at the top of women's tennis.
The championship was particularly significant as it was Rybakina's first title win as world No. 1, adding to an already remarkable year that includes two Grand Slam crowns.
In the women's doubles final, Fanny Stollar and Desirae Krawczyk defeated Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7-6(5), 5-7, [10-6] to claim the title.
