Rybakina vs Sabalenka Again? WTA Finals Draw Sets Up a Thrilling Road to the Title
Top-ranked Elena Rybakina and world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka will headline the singles groups at the 2026 WTA Finals, with American stars Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula drawn together in a challenging Group 1 as the season-ending championship prepares to begin at Indian Wells on Sunday.
The tournament, scheduled from November 8 to 15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California, will bring together the world’s eight leading singles players and eight doubles teams. The draw, conducted on Tuesday, has set up several intriguing match-ups, with players competing in a round-robin format for places in the semifinals.
Defending champion Rybakina will lead Group 1, which also features fourth seed Gauff, fifth seed Pegula and eighth seed Linda Noskova. Rybakina, who won the US Open this season, will be looking to retain her title after defeating Sabalenka in last year’s final.
Group 2 will be headed by Sabalenka, with third seed Mirra Andreeva, sixth seed Elina Svitolina and seventh seed Karolina Muchova completing the line-up.
The tournament will follow a round-robin format during the opening six days, with every player facing the other three members of their group. The top two players from each group will progress to the semifinals, keeping the competition wide open.
This year’s championship will also be a special occasion for three players making their WTA Finals debuts: French Open champion Andreeva, Muchova and Wimbledon champion Noskova.
The tournament returns to an outdoor setting for the first time since the 2023 edition in Cancun, Mexico. It will be hosted at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, home of the BNP Paribas Open, which stages combined men’s and women’s tournaments every March.
The 2026 Finals were moved to Southern California from Saudi Arabia amid safety and regional security concerns linked to the Iran war.
In the doubles competition, top seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani will lead Group 1, while second seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova headline Group 2.
Group 1 also features Guo Hanyu and Kristina Mladenovic, Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko, and Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai. Group 2 comprises Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez, Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs, and Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
With the world’s leading players assembled and a title defence at stake, Indian Wells is set for a high-profile finish to the women’s tennis season.
