Satheesan's Assembly Remarks on Champakulam Boat Race Holiday Trigger Political Storm
A political controversy has erupted in Kerala over Chief Minister V D Satheesan's remarks in the Legislative Assembly regarding a proposed local holiday for the Champakulam Moolam Boat Race , after an alleged off-the-record comment appeared to contradict his official response.
The issue arose when UDF MLA Reji Cheriyan sought a local holiday in Kuttanad Taluk for the annual boat race. In the Assembly, Satheesan said the government would consider the request. However, an open microphone allegedly captured him saying that the holiday would be granted "under no circumstances."
The clip was widely shared by CPI(M) leaders on social media, who accused the chief minister of taking contradictory positions and misleading the Assembly. CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan said the episode reflected Satheesan's "true political character," while MLA K U Jenish Kumar alleged it amounted to a breach of public trust.
Assembly Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said he was unaware of the chief minister's complete remarks, noting that anything beyond the officially recorded proceedings was off the record. He added that such comments would be out of character for Satheesan.
State Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph declined to comment on the alleged exchange inside the House but said any concerns should be examined through established parliamentary procedures.
Meanwhile, organisers of the centuries-old Champakulam Moolam Boat Race expressed disappointment and urged the government to declare a local holiday before the event on June 29 . Preparations are in the final stage, with 15 boats , including iconic snake boats and teams from the Champions Boat League, expected to participate.
