SC Sets August 13 Hearing on Tamil Nadu Plea for Due Cauvery Share

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on August 13 Tamil Nadu’s plea seeking directions to Karnataka for the immediate release of its due share of Cauvery water.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, took note of submissions made by counsel appearing for the Tamil Nadu government.

The state government told the court that Tamil Nadu was not receiving its stipulated share of Cauvery water despite the ongoing rain-deficient year. The plea seeks directions to Karnataka to ensure the release of water in accordance with the state’s entitlement.

“We will list it for hearing on Thursday,” the Chief Justice said.

The Joseph Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government had approached the Supreme Court on August 3, seeking urgent intervention in the Cauvery water-sharing dispute with Karnataka.

Tamil Nadu has maintained that the availability of Cauvery water is crucial for meeting the requirements of farmers and other dependent sectors in the state. The latest plea comes amid concerns over water availability following inadequate rainfall.

The Cauvery river dispute has remained a longstanding source of tension between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, with the two states frequently approaching courts and authorities over the sharing and release of water.

The Supreme Court’s August 13 hearing is expected to examine Tamil Nadu’s plea for immediate directions to Karnataka regarding the release of its share of Cauvery water.
