Scary Movie returns after 26 years, original cast reunites for June release

The cult horror-comedy franchise Scary Movie is set to return with its sixth instalment, scheduled to hit Indian theatres on June 12, Paramount Pictures India announced. The film marks a major comeback for the series, bringing back the original core cast more than two decades after the first movie became a global box office sensation.

The new chapter reunites Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris and Regina Hall as Shorty, Ray, Cindy and Brenda, respectively. Their return signals a creative revival for the franchise, which originally launched in 2000 as a parody of late 1990s slasher films.

Directed by Michael Tiddes, the film promises to deliver a broad-ranging parody of today’s horror landscape. According to the makers, the story takes aim at reboots, remakes, requels, prequels and sequels, as well as what they cheekily call “every final chapter that absolutely isn’t final.” The Wayans brothers have described the project as a bold return to their signature brand of satire, insisting that “nothing is sacred.”

The ensemble cast also features Damon Wayans Jr., Kim Wayans, Gregg Wayans, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Heidi Gardner, Lochlyn Munro, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, Benny Zielke and Cameron Scott Roberts, blending familiar faces with fresh talent.

Created by the Wayans brothers, the franchise debuted as a spoof of films such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer . The original film grossed over USD 278 million worldwide, establishing the series as a global comedy phenomenon . After the Wayans brothers exited following the second instalment, later entries shifted tone. Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4 , directed by David Zucker, targeted films like The Ring , Signs and War of the Worlds , while the fifth instalment, released in 2013, starred Ashley Tisdale and Simon Rex.

With the Wayans brothers’ creative comeback , the sixth film aims to restore the franchise’s irreverent edge and position itself as one of the most anticipated horror-comedy returns of the year.
