Sea Emergency Averted: 14 Indians Safely Evacuated from Stricken Vessel Near Oman
In a successful and well coordinated maritime operation, all 14 Indian crew members aboard a commercial vessel have been safely rescued after an engine failure off the coast of Oman, the Embassy of India in Muscat confirmed on Sunday.
The incident involved the Indian flagged merchant vessel MSC Virat 1 , which experienced a technical engine failure while sailing in the region. Following the breakdown, the crew moved into life rafts as emergency protocols were activated and nearby ships rushed to assist.
Initial reports had indicated partial evacuation, but officials later confirmed that all 14 crew members were successfully rescued without any casualties. The rescue was carried out with the help of passing vessels and coordinated support from Omani maritime authorities .
One of the key responders, MV Jabal Ali 9 , played a crucial role in bringing the stranded seafarers aboard and ensuring their safety until the operation was fully completed.
According to the Embassy, the operation was conducted in close coordination with regional maritime agencies, ensuring rapid response and safe recovery of all personnel. Authorities confirmed that the crew is now in stable condition following the evacuation.
The embassy also noted that the crew had responded quickly after the engine failure by following safety procedures and transferring to life rafts, which helped streamline the rescue process.
The incident comes amid increased attention on maritime safety in the Gulf region, though officials have emphasised that this case was related to a technical malfunction and not any security related threat.
With all crew members now accounted for, the operation has been officially concluded, marking a successful outcome to what could have been a serious maritime emergency.
