Senegal Keep Knockout Dream Alive After Dominant 5-0 Victory Against Iraq
Senegal produced a ruthless display when it mattered most, thrashing 10 man Iraq 5-0 on Friday to breathe fresh life into their FIFA World Cup campaign. The emphatic victory significantly boosted the African side's hopes of progressing to the knockout stage as one of the tournament's best third placed teams.
Knowing that only a convincing win would keep their qualification hopes alive, Senegal approached the contest with urgency from the opening whistle. They wasted little time in making an impact as Habib Diarra found the net in just the fourth minute, handing his side the perfect start.
The match tilted further in Senegal's favour in the 13th minute when Iraq defender Rebin Sulaka received a straight red card after pulling back Sadio Mane , who was through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat. Reduced to 10 men, Iraq faced an uphill battle against a Senegal side determined to improve both its points tally and goal difference.
Despite enjoying numerical superiority, Senegal had to wait until the second half to turn their dominance into goals. Ismaila Sarr doubled the lead in the 56th minute before midfielder Pape Gueye took centre stage with two powerful long range strikes , putting the result beyond doubt. Iliman Ndiaye completed the rout with Senegal's fifth goal, capping off an impressive attacking performance.
The victory lifted Senegal to three points with a healthy plus two goal difference , strengthening their case for a place in the Round of 32 . However, their fate now depends on results elsewhere, with the final standings among the third placed teams yet to be decided.
"We have done our job, but qualification is no longer in our hands," Senegal coach Pape Thiaw admitted after the match, acknowledging that his team must now wait for other group fixtures to conclude.
Goal scorer Pape Gueye said the team's objective had been clear from the start.
"We knew we had to score as many goals as possible, and thankfully we managed to do exactly that," he said.
For Iraq , the defeat brought a disappointing end to their first World Cup appearance since 1986 . The Asian side finished the tournament without a single point despite entering the competition with high hopes.
Defender Merchas Doski apologised to the supporters, while coach Graham Arnold urged his players to treat the experience as a valuable learning opportunity, describing qualification itself as a remarkable achievement after four decades away from football's biggest stage.
While Iraq's campaign ends in disappointment, Senegal can still dream of extending their World Cup journey after delivering one of the tournament's most convincing victories.
